Kapil Dev visited my website Yesterday!

How is the feeling when you saw your favorite person visited your website?

This is what I faced Yesterday morning when I saw the comment of the great Indian cricketer Mr. Kapil Dev on my website. It is like a dream come true for me. When I saw the comment of my favorite cricketer I was so excited that I can’t express the emotion in words.

This is what he said:

Dear people,
I’m Indian crickets greatest son, Kapil Dev. I ask with great sincerity that you leave Mr Irfan alone. Who cares if he marries some guy that looks like his mum.

Thank you very much

I would love to hear the feelings of other bloggers, when they came to know that their favorite person has visited their website?

I am a great fan of Kapil Dev and when I saw his comment on my website, I just called up my best friend and told her that see you know who has visited my website today? It is the great living legend Kapil Dev. I was so excited and when she heard about this she too became excited.

Then I told this to a few more of my friends and then I sent one mail to my favorite cricketer, though I have not yet received the reply for him, but I am sure one day he will surely respond to my mail. Please do send me your comments and mails on this topic.

10 Benefits of Reading!

If you’re new here, and interested in the latest news and insights on news from India and world, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed. Thanks for visiting I News India.

I’m indebted to my mother to have inculcated a great habit like reading in me. I still remember how she used to just gift books for the special occasions like birthdays and Diwali. Slowly her perseverance of this trend became a passion for me.  This habit grew stronger as I grew up. I started working and the mounting pressure of work kept me away from reading for long spans of time. But whenever I got some pockets of idleness in between projects, reading always came to my rescue. It never let me be unoccupied. Besides just keeping me engrossed, reading helped me improve my vocabulary and general awareness about the world, introduced me to the different cultures around the globe, kept the motor of my brain working and imbibed a certain level of discipline in my life.

Want to learn English Language properly, then check this Successful On-line Course To Learn English in a Fast And Easy way from Emanuels School Of English.

Reading is one of the best hobbies a person can have. But it’s saddening to know that majority of us aren’t introduced to the fabulous world of books. If you are one of the non-book readers who feels you “don’t need no stinking books”, here are some reasons to start the habit…before you are left behind!

  1. Reading is an active mental process: Unlike sitting in front of the idiot box (TV), reading makes you use your brain. While reading you would be forced to reason out many things which are unfamiliar to you. In this process you would use the grey cells of your brain to think and become smarter.
  2. Reading improves your vocabulary: Remember in elementary school when you learned how to infer the meaning of one word by reading the context of the other words in the sentence? You get the same benefit from book reading. While reading books, especially challenging ones, you will find yourself exposed to many new words you wouldn’t be otherwise.
  3. Gives you a glimpse into other cultures and places of the world: How would you know about the life of people in Mexico if you don’t read about it? Reading gives you an insight into the diversity of ethnicity of people, their customs, their lifestyles etc. You become more aware about the different places and the code of conduct in those places.
  4. Improves concentration and focus: It requires you to focus on what you are reading for long periods. Unlike magazines, Internet posts or e-Mails that might contain small chunks of information, books tell the whole story. Since you must concentrate in order to read, like a muscle, you will get better at concentration.
  5. Builds self-esteem: The more you read, the more knowledgeable you become. With more knowledge comes more confidence. More confidence builds self-esteem. So it’s a chain reaction. Since you are so well read, people look to you for answers. Your feelings about yourself can only get better.
  6. Improves memory: Many studies show if you don’t use your memory, you lose it. Crossword puzzles are an example of a word game that staves off Alzheimer’s. Reading, although not a game, helps you stretch your memory muscles in a similar way. Reading requires remembering details, facts and figures and in literature, plot lines, themes and characters.
  7. Improves your discipline: Making time to read is something we all know we should do, but who schedules book reading time every day? Very few… That’s why adding book reading to your daily schedule and sticking to it, improves discipline.
  8. Improves creativity: Reading about diversity of life and exposing yourself to new ideas and more information helps to develop the creative side of the brain as it imbibes innovation into your thinking process.
  9. You always have something to talk about: Have you ever found yourself in an embarrassing situation where you didn’t have anything to talk about? Did you hate yourself for making a fool of yourself? Do you want a remedy for this? It’s simple. Start reading. Reading widens your horizon of information. You’ll always have something to talk about. You can discuss various plots in the novels you read, you can discuss the stuff you are learning in the business books you are reading as well. The possibilities of sharing become endless.
  10. Reduces boredom: One of the rules I have is if I am feeling bored, I will pick up a book and start reading. What I’ve found by sticking to this is that I become interested in the book’s subject and stop being bored. I mean, if you’re bored anyway, you might as well be reading a good book, right?

If you want to break the monotony of a lazy, uncreative and boring life, go and grab an interesting book. Turn the pages to explore a new world filled with information and ingenuity.

Do you believe on Astrology?

Ria was 22 years old and her parents had already started having nightmares about her marriage. Someone told them about a great astrologer who happened to be in town for some time. They rushed to know the fate of their daughter from the astrologer.

The astrologer asked for Ria’s date and time of birth and told them some general attributes about Ria. Little did the gullible and hassled parents know that they were being taken for a ride. He told them that she would definitely get engaged in coming 2 weeks. With new hopes up their sleeves, the happy couple went home. And then it became a vicious circle for the poor parents. Two weeks became 4 weeks and nothing happened. They went to the astrologer again and he assured them that they would get good news in the next month. Month after month they kept fooling themselves until it dawned on them, after a span of I year, that it was useless to waste their time, money and energy in going to the astrologer and it was time that they pumped up their own efforts in finding a good match for their daughter.

This is not just the story of just Ria and her parents. This is a reality of every second person on this earth. Astrology offers a number of things which many people find very desirable: information and assurance about the future, a way to be absolved of their current situation and future decisions, and a way to feel connected to the entire cosmos. Most of those who visit an astrologer end up feeling satisfied and feel that they have benefited. What this really means is not that astrology has accurately predicted the person’s future, but rather it means that visiting an astrologer or having a horoscope cast can be a fulfilling and personally satisfying experience. You are told relatively flattering things about your character and life, and in the end you are naturally pleased that someone cares about you.

I am not refuting the possibility of the authenticity of some astronomers. There have been great future predictors like Nostradamus whose books are being decoded till now because of the accuracy with which he had predicted some of the greatest events of the world. But nowadays it has become a lucrative business for people to proclaim their cosmic powers and dupe innocent people. Just imagine how convenient it would be if every second person could predict the future. Won’t every one of us be able to take control of our lives completely then? We would have the power to be the masters of our destiny. Who would believe in God? Should we raise these people to the pedestal of the Almighty? Have we ever thought that it is because our immaturity that these people are becoming stronger and stronger. Do we ever try to find out how through and learned a particular astronomer is?

It is thus our responsibility to gauge the genuineness of these people so that we can save ourselves from being conned.

5 Advantages & Disadvantages of Distance Learning!

When I graduated from my engineering college, I had a strong desire to pursue further studies like a management degree. But immediately after my college got over, I got a job offer from a leading IT company. I was in a dilemma since both the paths were alluring. I discussed my situation with some friends and they suggested that I should do a distance learning course from a renowned institution.

According to them, this would not hinder my job prospects and at the same time allow me to fulfill my aspiration of MBA. The idea was very appealing and I applied to Symbiosis school of management. Unfortunately, I could not complete my course and had to drop out of it mid-way. The mounting pressure of a new job (that too of a software engineer) and the heaps of weekly assignments was taking toll both on my performance at work and my health. So personally distance learning didn’t prove fruitful for me. But this does not mean that it is not a good option for working people. As every coin has two sides, even distance learning has its pros and cons.

Advantages:

It does not require commuting: You can save on a lot of time, money and energy by cutting down on travel.  The time saved can be judiciously used for personal and professional life.

You can work at your own convenience: Since all the classes are asynchronous, you have the liberty to review your assignments or do your homework during off-hours or at home.

You have the freedom of living anywhere you like: All you might require is an internet connection or a computer, and you can do your correspondence course from anywhere in the world.  This provides a lot of flexibility to professionals, especially if they have a travelling job.

It’s a self paced learning: Not everyone is born a genius. Some of us might take longer to grasp some concepts as compared to others. In case of distance learning you have the advantage of learning and understanding at your own pace. This reduces unnecessary stress and increases satisfaction.

It’s easily accessible to all: Online classes address physical accessibility issues that some people with limited mobility encounter when taking traditional classes. You don’t have to worry about gaining access to a classroom or sitting on uncomfortable desks. Instead, you can use your comfortable furniture in your home while enjoying free movement and a chance to further your education.

Disadvantages:

You have to juggle between job and studies: Distance learning is only fruitful if you can manage both your job and studies with equal sincerity. You have to put in a lot of efforts at both fronts. If you falter at ant one front, it is bound to have negative repercussions.

It does not offer immediate feedback: In a traditional classroom setting, your performance can be immediately assessed through questions and informal testing. With distance learning, you have to wait for feedback until the instructor has reviewed their work and responded to it.

It may not be acknowledged by all employers: Till now, all leading companies show preference for candidates who have done a regular course. The job prospects might not be as bright with a correspondence course as otherwise. You might even have to compromise on the pay-package in some situations.

It doesn’t help in building oral communication skills: You do not get the opportunity to interact with teachers and other students on a personal basis. This inhibits the building of verbal skills which is an essential trait when you go for interviews.

It leads to social isolation: Most often you’ll be studying alone. Distance learners may feel isolated or miss that social physical interaction that comes with attending a traditional classroom. However this impersonality has been lessening with advances and use of communication technologies such as bulletin boards, threaded discussions, chats, email and conferencing.

5 essential things to know before giving an Interview!

An interview is a magic wand which can get you a new job, change your present boring career into an exciting one, and get you a job that pays many times your current salary. It is something that can improve your career and make your life into a much better one. Successfully handling an interview has indeed become a necessity rather than a luxury! It is a place where one’s abilities are challenged to the greatest extent and his/her entire personality/attitude evaluated. It tests all your skills and can bring out certain facts about you, which you yourself wouldn’t have been aware of! However, with proper practice and effort, you can successfully face an interview.

Always be confident: your interviewer is certainly looking for a confident, calm and positive person for his company who can make mature and sensible decisions when need be. So walk in with a confident gait, greet the panel of interviewers pleasantly, and don’t let your tension or excitement show in your attitude.

Be well aware of the type of job: Most of the questions posed will be testing whether you understand the nature of the job and have the ability to handle it. If you are well versed with the requirements of the job, the interview is half done. Never attend an interview without having just an idea of the responsibilities required.

Know the company well: Nowadays almost all companies have their profile on the internet. Don’t neglect a thorough research of the firm before going for the interview. Know the key people associated with the firm. Think of a few suggestions that you feel can improve their product. This is a very likely question and you surely won’t have time and patience to sit and think over it at the interview table.

Know your subjects well for a technical interview: Tech interviews need a somewhat different type of preparation. You must have a very deep understanding of the subjects related to the job you are applying for. Know beforehand the technologies used by the company. Gather such information from books, online and people working in the same or similar firms. Know about the latest developments in the area you are applying for. Show qualities of teamwork since almost all tech jobs involve hundreds of people working on a single project. Team spirit is as important as the technical knowledge you possess.

Conduct a mock interview: Either ask yourself some questions in front of the mirror or take help of a friend or family in preparing you for your real interview. This makes you more comfortable with the interview environment and hence more confident.

Obesity is a major problem!

Technically speaking, obesity is a condition in which excess body fat accumulates to such an extent that health may be negatively affected. It is commonly defined as a body mass index (BMI = weight divided by height squared) of 30 kg/m2 or higher. This distinguishes it from being overweight as defined by a BMI of between 25-29.9 kg/m2.

Not so long ago, it was commonly believed that overweight and obese people were compulsive eaters, anxious, depressed, under stress, or trying to compensate for deficiencies in their lives. But today, when almost everyone seems to be getting heavier and obesity has become an international issue.

Some research suggests that depressed people are more likely to develop obesity. People may console themselves with “comfort food”, which is usually high in fat, sugar, and calories because they are anxious, lonely, angry, or suffering from low self-esteem. There is a characteristic type of depression with symptoms that include lethargy and overeating. Like most mind-body interactions, obesity can lead to ill health, which is linked to depression and anxiety.

Besides this the dietary habits contribute a lot towards obesity. I was in USA for a long time and obesity is increasing at an alarming pace there, especially amongst the younger generation. Majority of the youngsters thrive on cheeses and pizzas there. The ton of white flour and cheese ends up accumulating around the waist, leading to obesity. The second closest contender of food for them is fried food (French fries, fried chicken, fish, beef etc). These food items surely work wonders for the taste buds but certainly not for the body.

Another reason of obesity nowadays is the kind of jobs people are in. With more and more of desk work (where people have to keep sitting for long spans of time) and very less physical activity, people are becoming victims of obesity. The extreme competition in the corporate world has intensified this problem. Consultants, allured into the sexy world of money and fame, hardly have time to think about their health. Their schedules are jam packed with travel, meetings and deadlines to deliver their projects. The sleep deprived executives are left with little time to manage a healthy routine.

Technology cannot be excused either. With more and more advancements being made to make life more comfortable, we have overlooked the slow disaster it is leading us to. Everything can be done at the click of a button nowadays. This leaves very little space for physical activity for mankind.

The best methods of reducing excess weight are controlling diet and a moderate exercise program. Small drops in weight can create lower health risks for a person. Other methods of weight loss include drug therapy and surgery. But both of these come with risk of complications and mortality risks as well.

Career in BPO in India!

Few years back, India was basking in international recognition as a lucrative business destination for foreign companies. With more and more companies outsourcing their key business processes to India, the BPO industry saw an unparalleled boom. This created countless employment opportunities for young graduates and professionals. It became a great career option for numerous young, mid-career professionals to earn a competitive pay package and get acquainted to international work standards and cutting edge technology.

But with the financial meltdown in USA, the prospects of BPO industry look bleak now. With the crash of the major financial behemoths at the Wall Street, there is chaos, panic and despair in the entire IT and BPO industry in India. Almost 60% of the IT-BPO companies get their bread and butter from American financial institutions like Goldman Sachs, Washington Mutual, Citigroup, Bank of America, Morgan Stanley and Lehman Brothers. The future of about 23 lakh people is in doldrums right now with layoffs being witnessed in all major firms. Leading global HR consulting firm Manpower has drastically downgraded hiring outlook for India. According to Manpower, hiring outlook (percentage of hiring that companies plan) dipped from 56% to 33% for quarter ending March 2009 for finance and insurance sectors. For IT-ITES, the outlook has declined from 58% to 47%. Companies are going to be badly hit, especially in the banking financial services & insurance (BFSI), IT and BPO, say experts. It is estimated that at least 5000-8000 people may have to search for other job options.

Meanwhile, at Lehman’s India unit, the fate of 2,500 employees is still uncertain. At a meeting in Hong Kong this week, the company decided that employees will get their September salary, but there was no word on their future.

Vikram Bhardwaj, CEO of Redileon, an executive HR firm said: “All hirings, especially of top management across sectors, is going to be badly hit in the ripple effect. From short-to-mid term, the scenario can only worsen, unless positive signals emerge from the US economy. Every new requirement for a hiring is being scrutinised heavily by the finance departments in IT companies.”

The ripple effect has lead to cost cutting in the IT and BPO industry in India. This has a direct impact on the recruitment and pay-packages offered to fresher’s.

Though Indian BPO industry is shaken by the global meltdown, there might still be some hope left. Nasscom has assured that the impact on Indian industry would be company specific and short term. Stating that the Indian IT-BPO sector is a part of the global financial system that has seen a lot of turbulence in the recent past, the apex body said ‘our preliminary analysis of the current situation indicates that the impact will be short term and company specific.

All we can do is wait and watch how the world-wide paranoia and crisis affects the Indian industry in the future. Let’s hope that there is a silver lining of optimism behind this cloud of disaster.
