The launch of the new version of Digg i.e. Digg V 4 has triggered anger among the community members. Its impact can be understood from the outcome that Digg appointed Matt Williams of Amazon as the new CEO of digg. He will replace the interim CEO Kevin Rose, who was working as the CEO from April as Jay Adelson stepped down as the CEO of digg.
The new digg is disliked by many users, but let me tell you my own feedback on the new version of digg. I basically liked it. Let me explain a few points why I liked it:
1. The Bury Button: The most disliked step of the new digg was of the removal of the bury button. Bury was a feature through which digg members used to dislike any news which they either found inappropriate or spammy, and this feature was removed from the new version of the site. Frankly speaking if you will ask me, I really liked the removal of bury button, as most of the users has misused it in past. They used to down vote the links which either doesn’t belong to them, or they think it is inappropriate, now you all know that there is no fixed definition of inappropriate content. With new version of digg users can only dug, comment or save the link. I guess the new CEO will surely consider about bringing it back, but I will be happy if they don’t do the same.
2. The New Layout: Frankly many people did not like the new layout of the digg, but I really liked it. Although the layout of the previous version of digg was too good, but for me the digg 4 is looking simpler and I think it has good UI than the previous one. Well actually many people are upset with the lost of the green shade from digg and they are thinking that this new color scheme is more or less like that of Facebook. Frankly the Load More button instead of the pagination has angered the users. While you try to refresh the page you won’t be able to find the same links as you were getting a few moments back.
3. Opening of Links on The Same Page: While in earlier version of digg the links were opening in a new window, while in this version the links are opening in the same page. Those who were the tendency of digging without reading the material are really unhappy with it, as they use to do click on the link and voting for it without seeing the content. With the new version, you will have to open the link and then read it, or give a look at it and then come back to vote for it.
4. Removal of the Digg Toolbar: Frankly speaking why I like the new version of the digg is that they removed the digg toolbar, the inclusion of which in digg almost stopped me to submit any link in digg. I almost left digg with the inclusion of digg toolbar, and that is why I am happy that they removed the toolbar.
5. Upcoming Section: Well this is something which I too did not like, although it is not something which can irritate me. Removal of the upcoming section from each category of the digg is something which brought anger among the loyal members of the community. The recent changes brought the concept of displaying only the top news from the topic, which has already many diggs and no one can be able to see other news in that category which has not yet reached to the fp of digg. Now you will ask me why am I happy with this? My response is that now I can see the news of only those people whom I am following, so I can simply vote for the same, and this way I need not to look for the upcoming news from the category.
6. Removal of Banned Sites and Users: With the implementation of the new digg they unbanned all the banned users and sites. Although I am using digg from many years, and saw many people to get banned by digg, but digg never banned me as I never did anything which can fall into the category of bad user. I am only having one account with them and it is http://digg.com/vats Many a times friends of mine complained me that their account got banned by digg or their site got banned by them, although they never did anything wrong. Although I don’t want to comment on whether they did anything wrong or not, but I personally feel that banning users or site is not a solution, as they will then tend to move to other communities. So I am truly glad with the decision of unbanning the users and sites.
Frankly speaking the new CEO of the digg will have many things to bring it back on the track; otherwise digg will surely lose its place. These reasons were my personal view and I do understand that many people might contradict to it. I will ask them to post comment with their views on the topic.
