A few dangers of cell phone towers!

Gone are the days when mobiles were a luxury. In today’s fast paced world, they have become a household commodity. They have made our lives so comfortable that we easily overlook the danger these phones or their towers pose to us and all living beings. These transmission towers are being erected in every nook and corner of the country. With more and more competition amongst the telecommunication players, more and more damage is being done without us being aware of it.

These towers emit Invisible Electro Magnetic Radiations (EMR) which can prove fatal for our health. The major health problems which are related to over exposure to EMR are:

  • Abnormal cell growth promotion
  • DNA damage
  • Reduced immune system competence
  • Sleeplessness, irritability, anxiety, depression
  • Weakened blood-brain barrier
  • Childhood and adult leukemia
  • Eye cancer
  • Infertility and miscarriage
  • Attention span deficit and general memory loss
  • Sleep disturbance and chronic fatigue
  • Brain tumors
  • Cardiac problems

It is very dangerous for pregnant ladies and their unborn babies. Sperm count in men is known to decrease by constant exposure to these radiations. Recent studies done in Europe show that tumors can be induced in rats, which were exposed to the same power levels and distances that normal cell phone users are exposed to from the phone’s antenna. These towers are a deathbed not only for human beings but also for birds. They also avoid these towers.

The tragedy is more and more towers are being installed in close proximity around us. This is subjecting us to more and more radiations every day. I had even read about some ignorant people leasing out their terraces to telecommunication companies in allurement of a lot of money. They don’t realize that ultimately the money they are earning through this would be wasted in treating their own selves against the radiations being emitted from right on top of them.

The telecom companies continue to install towers, which have a radiation power level of 7260 microwatt/m2, despite the specified level being just 600 microwatt/m2. None of the mobile companies follows the standards fixed by the international commission of non-iodized radiation.

Over exposure to these radiations can cause us our lives and it’s time we bring about this awareness in everyone around us.

Dilemma of change of schools!

A survey showed that for the children who change schools frequently or even once or twice, it is a hell lot of a problem related to adjustments, proving their worth and finding the right kind of company.

A lot of children have to face changing of their schools due to transfer of their parents to different cities, or due to the popularity of a better branded school. Students spending a majority of their time in these early stages in school, this education temple becomes a second home for them. A sudden change of this second home sometimes brings petrified situations for the students.

A certain friend of mine had a few shifts of school and each time he’d be in a new school he would face tons of problems. Being a little introvert and simple, he would take time to mingle with people and choosing the right kind of mates, but by the time he would satisfy his needs of a companion of his type and would start to bond, he’d have to change the town due to his father’s job type. Similar situation was experienced by Radha, 14 years of age who had shifted from a small village to a metropolitan city such that even before reaching her destination, the very thought of leaving back her friends and the teachers she had been attached to was horrifying. Plus, the fear of adjusting in a bigger city with broader minded people brought her morale real down. Adding to all this, she got to know that the new school she had to enter to followed the CBSE board opposite to the ICSE board her prior school followed. Things are not always easy when a child has to completely shift to new surroundings.

There is a mental stress of proving again his abilities and capabilities after overcoming the fear of getting lost in the new crowd of achievers. The sensitive minds of youngsters are mis-balanced with such dilemmas.

To help them, the parents must prepare their kids well in advance about their shifting and keep reminding them that the surroundings or the people don’t affect one’s capabilities and it is very important to become outgoing and a little more friendly to solve their problem of making friends. They must be made to realize the positive parts of it as one of them being a chance to know a variety of people.

China aftershock destroys 71,000 homes, 6 dead!

A powerful aftershock of a magnitude 6.0 in central China on Sunday destroyed tens of thousands of homes killing six people and more than 500 others were injured. The China National Seismic Network said this aftershock was the strongest of dozens in the nearly two weeks after the disaster on May 12 when the country’s worst earthquake happened in three decades.

Before the aftershock, the Cabinet said the confirmed death toll from the disaster had risen to 62,664, with another 23,775 people missing. Premier Wen Jiabao has warned the number of dead could surpass 80,000.

Some 71,000 homes that had survived the original quake were leveled in the aftershock, and another 200,000 were in danger of collapse from the aftershock that caused office towers to sway in Beijing, 800 miles away.

A mudslide caused by the aftershock blocked a road. Soldiers rushed with explosives to unblock a debris-clogged river threatening to flood homeless quake survivors.

Previous landslides loosened by the quake jammed rivers across the disaster area, creating 35 new lakes that placed 700,000 survivors in jeopardy of floods, Vice Minister of Water Resources E Jingping told reporters in Beijing.

The new Tangjiashan Lake in Beichuan Country is the most serious issue, where some 1,600 police and soldiers were hiking with 22 pounds of explosives each to blast through debris. Hazy weather prevented helicopter flights to the area, and forecasts for rain increased the risk that lakes could overflow.

Rain will “not only cause the amount of water going into the lakes to increase, but also influence their normal structure, so the situation is quite serious,” said Vice Minister E.

“It is a daunting task because of the unpredictability of when the barrier lakes will burst.” He added.

About 20,000 people have been evacuated from the disaster area due to the flood risk, and the total relocated could rise to 100,000, said Liu Ning, chief engineer at the Ministry of Water Resources. As reported, about 69 dams in Sichuan were in danger of collapse from quake damage, but reservoirs have been drained to lessen the risk.
