The much awaiting first test match between India and Australia today ends with no result. The match will be remembered for the superb batting display by Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan. Once again sachin Tendulkar missed the record of Brian Lara.

Aussies won the toss and elected to bat first, they scored 430 runs in the first inning. Skipper Ponting made 123 runs while Hussey made 146 runs. Other than them Katich made 66, while Haddin made 33 runs. From Indian side Zaheer Khan took 5 wickets while Ishant Sharma took 4 wickets and Harbhajan Singh took one wicket.

Replying to this Team India got all out at 360 runs only, this way Aussies get a lead of 70 runs in the first inning. From Indian side the attraction was the superb half centuries by Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan, Bhajji made 54 while Zaheer made not out 57 runs. Other than them Dravid made 51, Ganguly made 47 while Sehwag made 45 runs. From Australia’s side Johnson took 4 wickets while Watson took 3 wickets and Clarke took 2 wicket. Brett Lee too took one wicket.

In second innings Aussies made 228 runs for the loss of 6 wickets, this increased their lead to 298. In their second inning Watson made 41 runs while Haddin made an unbeaten 35 runs. Ishant Sharma from Indian side took 3 wickets in this inning along with Bhajji taking 2 wickets and Zaheer Khan took one wicket.

So India got a target of 299 runs but they made only 177 runs at the loss of 4 wickets and this way match become draw. Sachin Tendulkar missed the half century by only one runs. The match will be remembered for the last match of Saurav Ganguly in Bangalore. He returned to the pavilion unbeaten and people gave them a good farwell too.

Other then the skipper of the Australian team it is Matthew Hayden, Simon Katich and Michael Clarke who had already played a test match in India. This simply means that in any match against India Aussies will play with at least 7 player’s who don’t have any experience of playing test match in India. This will surely boost the morale of Team India.

3> Do you know how many test matches Aussies lost against India in 21st Century? Well the answer is 5, the most number of matches in which Aussies faced a defeat against any country in the 21st century. While you will become surprised to know that Aussies has lost 4 test matches against England during this period.

4> What is the batting average of the leader of the touring team in India? It is merely 12.28 for Rickey Ponting in India. You won’t believe that in 8 matches Rickey could scored only 172 runs and out of that 60 is the maximum during the Kolkata Test in 1998.

With the recent rise in the row over misjudged matches falling in the less deserving side, the ICC introduced a new rule wherein the players could seek for a second opinion by the third umpire if they are not satisfied of the on field umpire.

In the coming test series between India and Sri Lanka which is starting on the 23rd of July, the BCCI announced early this week that this ICC’s new experimental rule would be applied

The new rule allows the batsman or the fielding captain, to make an appeal to the TV umpire for a review of the on field umpire in the case of an unsatisfactory decision. Each team has been allowed three unsuccessful appeals per an inning. If a batsman has been given out by the on field umpire but the batsman is not satisfied with his decision, the batsman appeals to the TV umpire. In case if the reviewal is in favour of the decision of the umpire, it is calculated as unsuccessful, the team being allowed only 3 unsuccessful appeals.

The rule is applicable for all dismissal ways excepting the case when the batsman arrives late on the field. In such a case, the batsman is not applicable to make an appeal to the third umpire.

This system can be compared to a similar system used in tennis but only for simple line calls. Being accepted by the ICC in March, the rule was first to be tested in the comin England-South Africa series, but there was a problem regarding the non agreement of the respective boards.

The actions involved for the appeal are:

• The batsman has to make a T sign with his hands if he is not satisfied of the decision taken by the on field umpire. In such a case, the decision is transferred to the TV umpire.
• If TV umpire is upholding the appeal made, the umpire would cross his hands thrice, each team having three unsuccessful appeals per inning.

The new system has once been tried at the English domestic scene in friend’s provident trophy but a huge criticism had to be faced with it due to no verdict being given in the favor of the appeal made by the TV umpire

Another threat to the system is that the on field umpires could start feeling their decision making abilities being questioned.
