One time I thought this movie will appeal only to Indian audiences, but the film has gone global and won the Oscar, not only one or two, but eight. The movie Slumdog Millionaire is made by the British director Danny Boyle.
The novel on which this film is based has 12 chapters answering 12 questions to win that million by Jamal, the given name in the novel was Ram Mohammed Thomas, but the director changed that to Jamal for the film. Likewise there have been minor changes to maintain the pace of the movie Slumdog Millionaire.
It is a Hollywood-Bollywood movie. It grips you from the start and takes you through a roller coaster ride first through the biggest slum of Bombay, Dharabi and then the under belly of Bombay.
The story is of a boy growing up in Dharabi and wins a crore in Kaun Banega Crorepati or 2 million dollar. He correctly answers all 12 questions though being an illiterate. The answer of each question has story to tell connected with his life.
India justifiably has much to celebrate about Slumdog’s night of Oscar glory. A R Rahman struck the high note with two Oscars. Rahman’s music is rooted in the soul and sensibilities of the best of the Indian classical tradition and yet retains the ability to resonate internationally.
I think director has done a good job by not choosing the known faces of Bollywood for the lead cast, though the story is farfetched but the casting coup of anonymous actors has made it quite plausible. It is a compelling film which is continuously moving forward backward like life itself.
The last scene with a Bollywood style dance on the railway platform will remind you that there is a Bollywood in the movie. It is a director’s movie…. It is a British movie with Indian heart.

For the first time in the history of academy awards, any Indian musical score is rocking on the red carpet of Oscar awards. The best movie of the year is “Slumdog Millionaire” as it won eight academy awards tonight in the 81st academy awards ceremony. For the first time, an Indian movie has claimed so many Oscar awards and this is a matter of pride for the entire nation.
The 81st academy awards were dominated by Indian movies. Although Indian films are generally dominated by music, but those musical movies are not liked in the biggest award ceremony of the world, this time Slumdog has changed the trends, and as according to the Irfan Khan who is in a leading role in this movie the “Jai Ho” song which has won the best original score and best original song in 81st academy awards, is playing every where in US at the moment. Slumdog has won eight oscar awards including Best Picture, Best Direction, Best Music Song, Best Music Score, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Adopted Screenplay, and Best Sound Mixing.
“Smile Pinki” was another one which also won the award in Short Documentary award. This is the small documentary movie which is based on a little girl “Pinki” from Uttar Pradesh India. This is the touching moment for the little girl Pinki who don’t even know Hindi or English, she only know Bhojpuri.
A. R. Rahman became the first Indian to won the Oscar awards for the category of Best Original Score and Best Original Song. On the other hand Guljar too won the Oscar awards for the Best Original song. Rahman and Guljar both won the awards for their song “Jai Ho” in Slumdog.
So it’s the time of party for India, for Slumdog crew and Rahman. Rahman was looking dapper in a black sherwani. Like a good Indian boy, he mentioned his mother and said a few words in his native tongue Hindi that “Mere paas Maa hai” means I have my mother with me and her blessings are with me. She came with me.
So two Indian movies Slumdog Millionaire and Smile Pinki brought Oscar to India and thus they also brought the hope, expectations, joy and happiness to the country. I News India wish all the crew members of both the movies big Thanks for bringing the matter of pride for India.
