Today, 2 September, is the birthday of late Ishmeet Singh, the winner of music reality show Amul Star Voice of India in 2007.  His family, friends and fans must be praying for his soul to rest in peace but he will have many birthday wishes if he had been alive for his 20th birthday on Tuesday.

Ishmeet, drowned on July 29 in a swimming pool in Maldives where he had gone to perform is remembered as a “wonderful”, “down-to-earth” and “sincere” person by the Indian music industry.

Bhangra pop king Daler Mehndi expressed confidence that had Ishmeet stayed on he would have definitely carved a niche for himself in the competitive Bollywood industry.

“It was very difficult to overcome the sadness of Ishmeet’s death. At such a young age, he earned so much name and fame. He became a singing sensation. Despite his Punjabi background, he used to sing any song easily without the Punjabi accent,” Mehndi said.

Expressing grief that he could not attend the cremation ceremony, Mehndi added: “He was a very down-to-earth and simple person. He died very young. I am sure that had he not passed away so early, he would have built a strong foothold in Bollywood as he had a different voice and a versatile style of singing.”

His co-participants today remembered him on his birthday and expressed their grief on his absence.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal presented a cheque of Rs 1.1 million, a citation and a shawl to Ishmeet’s parents as a mark of honor at a state-level function to mark the country’s 62nd Independence Day.

Badal has announced the opening of an international level music academy in Ludhiana in his memory. Ishmeet’s only attempt at playback singing of forthcoming Punjabi movie Sat Sri Akal was released in Chandigarh recently.

His untimely demise was a matter shock and sorrow for the whole nation along with his home state, Punjab and his family. He was a source of inspiration for a horde of young and aspiring singers. His loss was irreparable for the all music lovers.

Although he is not with us but he will be alive with his voice in everybody’s heart. May god give peace to his soul!

A day after the 20-year-old Ishmeet Singh, the voice of India 2007, died in a swimming pool of a Maldives resort on Tuesday evening, the family members of the victim suspected his death as a murder. His family, on Wednesday, demanded higher level probe into his death.

Ishmeet’s body arrived Ludhiana late Wednesday where he was scheduled to get a state funeral. Post mortem reports of the body states that Ishmeet died due to drowning. However the family remains unconvinced.

Family claims that the swimming pool was just 6ft deep which is not deep enough to drown a young man. Also, Ishmeet’s friends present at the spot gave contradictory statements leaving the relatives doubtful in the matter.

Ishmeet’s uncle Charan Kamal Singh stated that injury marks on the forehead and chest and his swollen face had aroused suspicion that he may have been murdered.  He stated 3 possible reasons of murder: Jealousy of fellow-contestants, conspiracy of professional singers or murder by some militant outfit.

“His death is not an accident alone. It could be part of a conspiracy. We want the matter investigated thoroughly. We want a case registered,” said Charan Kamal Singh while talking to Zee News.

The budding singer was in Maldives to participate in the Star Voice of Maldives on August 1. He didn’t know swimming and ventured deep into the swimming pool and drowned to death at Dhonveli Beach and Spa Resort on Tuesday evening. On Nov 26 last year, he won the trophy of ‘Voice of India’ singing contest handed by Lata Mangeshkar.

The shocking news of death of the 20-year-old winner of Amul Star Voice of India 2007 contest, Ishmeet Singh left his fans stunned and the whole nation gripped in grief. His family was plunged into sorrow.

The reality show winner and singing sensation Ishmeet was in Maldives to participate in the Star Voice of Maldives on August 1. He drowned in a swimming pool at Dhonveli Beach and Spa Resort on Tuesday evening. He ventured deep into the pool while he never could swim and the lifeguard wasn’t available to help. He was there with his friends but alas! None of the boys could swim.

He was taken by a resort launch to ADK hospital in Male’ but he couldn’t saved, according to assistant manager Marlon Robert.

Ishmeet was crowned the winner of Amul Star Voice in November 24, 2007, by the legendary Lata Mangeshkar. Recently, he had even released a Punjabi album called Gurbani.

“It was a real shock for me as the death of a musical gem came as unbelievable to me. I still can’t imagine that he is no more with us,” said Music Director, Lalit Sen.

One of his relative said, “He informed me of his plans to Maldives. We had a function at home and I insisted he stay back, but he prioritized for his trip and I can’t believe that the same God has taken him from us.”

Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal also expressed his shock. “It’s a shock for the entire nation. I am here to be a part of the grieved family,” he said.

His body is to be airlifted to India today afternoon.
