A few dangers of cell phone towers!

Gone are the days when mobiles were a luxury. In today’s fast paced world, they have become a household commodity. They have made our lives so comfortable that we easily overlook the danger these phones or their towers pose to us and all living beings. These transmission towers are being erected in every nook and corner of the country. With more and more competition amongst the telecommunication players, more and more damage is being done without us being aware of it.

These towers emit Invisible Electro Magnetic Radiations (EMR) which can prove fatal for our health. The major health problems which are related to over exposure to EMR are:

  • Abnormal cell growth promotion
  • DNA damage
  • Reduced immune system competence
  • Sleeplessness, irritability, anxiety, depression
  • Weakened blood-brain barrier
  • Childhood and adult leukemia
  • Eye cancer
  • Infertility and miscarriage
  • Attention span deficit and general memory loss
  • Sleep disturbance and chronic fatigue
  • Brain tumors
  • Cardiac problems

It is very dangerous for pregnant ladies and their unborn babies. Sperm count in men is known to decrease by constant exposure to these radiations. Recent studies done in Europe show that tumors can be induced in rats, which were exposed to the same power levels and distances that normal cell phone users are exposed to from the phone’s antenna. These towers are a deathbed not only for human beings but also for birds. They also avoid these towers.

The tragedy is more and more towers are being installed in close proximity around us. This is subjecting us to more and more radiations every day. I had even read about some ignorant people leasing out their terraces to telecommunication companies in allurement of a lot of money. They don’t realize that ultimately the money they are earning through this would be wasted in treating their own selves against the radiations being emitted from right on top of them.

The telecom companies continue to install towers, which have a radiation power level of 7260 microwatt/m2, despite the specified level being just 600 microwatt/m2. None of the mobile companies follows the standards fixed by the international commission of non-iodized radiation.

Over exposure to these radiations can cause us our lives and it’s time we bring about this awareness in everyone around us.

India – An e-waste ground!

A recent study disclosed that developing countries like India and China are creating a novel but dangerous waste. The e-waste is giving a serious emerging threat to environment. The reports brought out by a leading environment group, Greenpeace India, says that these booming economies are more and more dependent on electronic and electrical equipments which is giving rise to electronic waste.

“Primitive recycling or disposal of e-waste to landfills and incinerators causes’ irreversible environmental damage by polluting water and soil and contaminating air,” states the report titled as “Take Back Blues - An assessment of e-waste take-back in India”.

It is poisoning our soil and water, causing serious health problems. The report showed that in 2007 India generated 380,000 tonnes of e-waste from discarded computers, televisions and mobile phones. This, the report said, was projected to more than double by 2012, to 800,000 per annum with a growth rate of 15 per cent.

Shocked by the findings, Abhishek Pratap, Greenpeace Toxics campaigner and the principal investigator for the study questioned, “It seems like e-waste take-back in India is in no way a priority for global brands. Otherwise, how else can one explain the irresponsible conduct of brands like Sony, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba, Samsung and Philips, which have no take-back service in India whatsoever?”

“Long-term exposure to deadly component chemicals and metals like lead, cadmium, chromium, mercury and polyvinyl chlorides (PVC) can severely damage the nervous systems, kidney and bones, and the reproductive and endocrine systems, and some of them are carcinogenic and neurotoxic,” the report mentions.

Now the question is how to tackle the problem before it becomes seriously out of control. Greenpeace Toxics campaigner Rampati Kumar said that the only way to tackle this novel threat is eco-friendly equipment. He believes that global and domestic brands manufacture should ensure eco-friendly equipment to control the threat.

“The solution lies with the brand owners or manufacturers of electronic products, which need to bear responsibility for financing the treatment of the own-branded e-waste discarded by their customers. If brands follow the ‘cradle to grave’ approach by ensuring take-back and bring back responsibility, it might work,” he says. ”

It was found in the study that half of the global brands have no take-back service in India. Nine out of 20 brands surveyed have no take-back service. The nine brands include Apple, Microsoft, Panasonic, PCS, Philips, Sharp, Sony, Sony Ericsson and Toshiba. Only two brands, HCL and WIPRO, stand out as having the best take-back practice in India and have come out publicly in support of e-waste legislation in India.

“As part of HCL’s eco safe programme, we give booklets along with our products that address waste disposal and inform customers of take back policies, we also host customer seminars telling them about the importance of electronic waste disposal,” George Paul, executive vice-president marketing, HCL Info Systems, said.

“Customers have to incur the cost of giving back the equipment; thus they prefer to sell it to local scrap dealers for a nominal price. Unlike in Europe where once a week the local municipality picks up the electronic waste for a charge levied at the time of purchase of goods, in India the consumer is still at a fairly nascent stage of understanding waste disposal.” He added.

Even as India heads for an e-waste crisis, most of the global electronic brands have no functioning e-waste take-back services in India.

The findings have sounded an alarm of emerging e-waste crisis and if not dealt properly at time, this e-waste will be proved harmful to the economy as well as to the global environment.

Get easy job with Blue Card in Europe!

Blue card is going to be available in Europe as an alternative of American Green card. Europe will also provide brilliant career options to Indian talent like America. As America provides green card to foreign citizens to live for a long duration, Europe is also going to start its Blue card service on the same track. European Union (EU), which manages a group 27 European countries have put this proposal. The proposal is put forward for non-European citizens with an eye on heavy Demand of technicians and other specialists in future.

A senior officer of European commission told that this proposal will be applicable after common agreement of 27 member countries of the committee. European countries are thinking on the subject and many countries had given their consent also. But disapproval of few countries the issue is on hold. Officials of the council expect the positive reply of all countries as the Blue Card service is in favour of European countries.

Presently, Indian students are allowed to study in Europe but have to come back as soon as they finish their studies unlike in America they are allowed to go for job after completion of their studies. This is the reason why a large number of Indian students prefer to go America, said the officials.

Officials also said that if the European countries want to struggle the world economy than they have to attract young talents through Blue card service similar to Green Card. Special residence and work permit issue is proposed for that which will be called ‘EU Blue Card’. This card can be issued by any member of European Monastery. Every person with Blue Card will be allowed to come to anywhere in whole European Monastery.

According to European Committee, joining letter of any European company will be needed to get the Blue Card. A relevant degree or a diploma will be also needed to service in the company. Salary should be good enough to lure any European. This is conditioned so that there will be no exploitation of any non-European person for the job.
