After giving the cheapest car to the world, India is on its way to provide cheapest laptop at a mere cost of $10. Yes! It is unbelievable but Minister of State for Human Resource Development D. Purandeswari said on Tuesday that research was being conducted to develop the laptop, especially for use by students, which will cost all of $10.

She said that the development of cheap laptop will combat problems like the low computer literacy and e-learning not only in India, but also the world over.

“Research in this direction is being already carried out at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras,” she told the e-India annual summit on information and communication technologies.

At present, the cheapest laptop range not less than $100. It is at least 10 times costlier. The “Xo” sold by the Massachusetts-based non-government organization ‘One Laptop Per Child Foundation’ sells for $188.

However, India did not sign up for the ‘One Laptop Per Child program’ after officials in the education ministry decided that giving a computer to every child is “pedagogically suspect”, and may actually be detrimental to the growth of the creative and analytical abilities of the child.

But Reliance Communications has been doing pilots of the OLPC in India since last year.

Earlier this year, Tata group has developed Rs 1 lakh car, the Nano which get famous not only in India but all over the world.

Your future computer will talk to you!

A new computer system in on its way to develop which will be able to talk to you and can react to your voice and facial expressions!

A team at Queen’s University in Belfast claimed making this ‘talking computer’ known as Sensitive Artificial Listener (SAL) system, as part of an European project called SEMAINE which is led by DFKI, the German centre for research on Artificial Intelligence.

The new system SAL will be able to perceive human being’s facial expressions; voice tone and perform different actions accordingly.

Lead researcher Prof Roddy Cowie said, “A basic feature of human communication is that it is coloured by emotion. When we talk to another person, the words are carried on an undercurrent of signs that show them what attracts us, what bores us and so on.”

He told that non-interacting behavior of computers is one of the reasons which make people frustrating while working.

He stated, “SEMAINE and projects like it will change the way people interact with technology. They mean that you will be talking to your computer in 20 years’ time.”

“These new developments depend on connecting technology to the relevant understanding of people, and it is recognized worldwide that we have a distinctive strength in bringing psychology, linguistics and ethics to bear on the process of developing the new systems.” He added.

The new system will definitely make the work more interesting and the interaction with machine will give a new definition to the technology.
