Tragedy Made Worse!

In a bizarre incident, a father became responsible for accidentally killing her 22 month old daughter while reversing the family car (Tata Sumo). The incident took place on Saturday when the family was returning from an outing at the nearby park. Anita, Shubhangi’s mother (the girl who got killed), got down from the car to unlock the main door while Sunil Kumar (the father) was reversing the car. He was unaware that his tender girl was walking towards the car. That night as the reversing car hit the Shubhangi, she fell down and hurt her head against a stone on impact.

“We heard Anita screaming and rushed out, where we saw both parents trying to revive Shubhangi, who was bleeding. She was immediately taken to Max, where she died later,” added the neighbor.

The tragedy does not end here. The police have registered a case of death by negligence against the father under section 304(A). A senior police official confirmed that, “A case has been registered and the father, Sunil Kumar, will be arrested soon.”

Just imagine the plight of the mourning father. He would not have still recovered from the jolt of his mistake when the news of his arrest came. “You can imagine the grief that Sunil is feeling. Shubhangi was his favorite, and he used to spend all his free time with his family. Now we will have to also fight for Sunil’s freedom,” said a relative.

According to neighbours, the Kumars had shifted last year to the locality, which was near Sunil’s parents’ home in Kalyanpuri, New Delhi. Kumar, who ran a cable business, would take his family out every weekend. “The elder daughter is in class I in St Mary’s school. Both Sonia and Shubhangi used to play around with neighborhood kids. They looked like the perfect family,” said another neighbor, Sakshi.

I’m still unsure if registering a case against a lamenting father is the right thing to do. If Mr. Kumar actually loved his daughter as much as is claimed by the relatives, will he ever be able to pardon himself for the mistake he has made? Isn’t the guilt of his act enough for his penance? What can be worse for a father to be tormented by the fact that he was responsible for his own child’s death every day of his life?

  • Proper food: Healthy food is a necessity for a healthy mind. Give milk, eggs fish, peanuts, millet, corn, spinach, fruits etc. which are protein and vitamin rich.
  • Make the things interesting: If the children found the things interesting and favorite they will learn them more easily and build up a strong remembrance for the concerned things. For example for kids make the lessons musical and colorful. They will enjoy them and learn them too.
  • Repeat the lessons: Keep the lessons repeated either by singing, talking or in picture form. This will keep revising the things and make a place in their mind.
  • Exercise: Let your child to go for exercise daily. It not only improves body but improves mind and memory. Fresh air in the morning keeps the mind relaxed which is needed for a healthy mind and thoughts.

Niketa Mehta suffers miscarriage!

Niketa Mehta, who loses the case of her appeal eight days back in Bombay High Court to abort her 25-week-old fetus detected with a congenital heart problem, has suffered a miscarriage on Wednesday. His husband, Haresh Mehta, a stockbroker, had confirmed the news that she suffered a miscarriage on August 12.

Haresh Mehta blamed intense media pressure for his wife’s high blood pressure and increased stress level which led to the miscarriage.

The couple had challenged the country’s 37-year-old abortion law (Pregnancy Act of 71) that does not allow termination of pregnancy beyond 20 weeks unless it harms mother’s life or health.

After medical reports that her child would be born with a complete congenital heart blockage and malpositioned arteries, the couple had sought the termination of the 25-week-old pregnancy. But on August 4, the Bombay HC dismissed the plea saying that the case is not convincing.

The medical report had claimed that the child would have required a pacemaker soon after birth. The case has divided the country into two sides - one against the abortion and the other which favors the couple.

Confirming that his wife Niketa had a miscarriage on Tuesday, Haresh Mehta said, “If not the court, at least god was on our side.”

Well, its god own justice to the couple and their unborn baby. Whatever it happens, it happens for good but the case had caught much attention by the country and media which left many questions unanswered. Should the 37-year-old abortion law needs amendment? It is the one of the biggest question on the law.

The parents who appealed to abort their fetus, plea rejected!

The Bombay high Court on Monday dismissed Niketa Mehta and Harish Mehta’s plea to abort their unborn 24-week-old fetus which may have a congenital heart defect.

The couple appealed in the court after they discovered that the unborn child had blockages in heart. They appealed that they won’t be able to afford to care for the baby or endure the trauma. But the court did not find the case convincing and dismissed the appeal. The court ordered a special committee from JJ Hospital to “give an additional confirmed opinion”.

“Can a life be killed once you have it,” the court asked.

The couple are pleading the case on the basis that the child is suffering from a congenital heart block that would require a permanent pace-maker, meaning that the child would have a disabled life and would also hurt them financially which they would not be able to afford in the long run.

Different specialists gave different views on the matter. According to report of JJ Hospital, there are very less chances of having a congenital handicap at birth.

While the couple, who had love marriage and the unborn baby is their first child, cited doctor’s report that asserts that the child will suffer critical problems even with a pace-maker some experts said that there might not needed any operation while pregnancy or immediately after birth to cure the baby. The baby can survive normally with a pacemaker

The issue became debatable and it is still on. The couple is confused whether they should appeal in Supreme Court or should they leave the case. Some lawyers said that it is like a case of mercy killing.

This is not the issue of mere choice. Its not a thing one can choose with his/her wish. It is a matter of life- a human life. No one has any right to destroy a life but this case is a bit different. Choice is to terminate the life before birth or to provide a life time pain to the child as well as the parents. Is it justified to terminate the life?

The case also gave rise to a debate whether there should be amendments in the abortion law. The case had given a challenge to the country’s 37-year-old abortion law that does not allow termination of pregnancy beyond 20 weeks unless it harms mother’s life or health. But the government ruled out on Monday amending the abortion laws in consideration of similar cases.

“As it is today going by just one case, I do not think the law can be amended,” Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss told the media.

World Day Against Child Labor, Say Yes to Education!

Child Labor

World Day against Child Labor (WDACL), 12th June, is a day celebrated across the globe each year to fight child labor. This year the day focuses on “Education, The Right Response to End Trafficking and Child Labor”.

Elimination of child labor and education for all are two sides of the same coin. Thousands of activities are held across the world to focuses on the need to improve access of children to education as the right response to child labor.

The only way to eliminate exploitation of children is free, compulsory and quality education for all, regardless of gender, race, religion, and social or economic status, as felt by all including the experts and social workers.

Education creates awareness of the right and duties of a person. This is the only media by which children can get awareness about their surroundings and the proper way to lead life.

The ILO has estimated that some 165 million children between the ages of 5 and 14 are involved in child labor. Many of these children work long hours, often in dangerous conditions. Their innocence gets lost in working for long hours for small amount of money. Their childhood is exploited by people for their little profits.

Many people don’t send their children to school because of poverty. Financial problems are the main reason. In place of school the kids are then sent for tiring jobs for small money.

Dropout’s school children specially remain a major concern, though the government has initiated many schemes. However, mid-day meal the lucrative scheme aimed to attract children to schools, is not helping the purpose of ensuring 100 per cent attendance. Reasons cited for dropouts are many, like poverty which compels children to work. Nevertheless, negligence of teachers in government schools worsens the situation.

Raman Magsaysay Awardee and Chairperson of National Commission for protection of Child Rights, Shantha Sinha says “The only way to eliminate the menace is to educate children, which is anyway a fundamental right of every child enshrined in the Constitution. Article- 21 (A) guarantees free and compulsory education to every child in the age group of 6-14.”

Government should come forward with major steps to achieve 100% education. Some of the steps can be:

  1. Free and compulsory education
  2. Provision of girls education
  3. Ensuring proper faculty and trained teachers
  4. Providing catch up education opportunities for children and youth who have so far missed out on formal schooling
  5. Enforcing laws on child labor and education in line with international standards
  6. Tackling poverty
  7. Raising public awareness to tackle child labor
  8. Promoting human rights and development

Not only the government but public should be aware of this need of education for all. Educated people should keep an eye in their vicinity and should teach others. A combined effort by all will help to eliminate child labor and will provide an educated society.
