Film festivals are such a platform where a maker gets to showcase his movie in front of different classes of audiences. In such a way they make for a great way to introduce the movie to the public and get them to see it and appreciate it. Though film festivals in India arrived a bit late, but they are soon gaining popularity. So the Indian movie makers are opting for film festivals to gain popularity for their films rather than straightaway releasing them at the theaters.

Gift from Hollywood: Basically the unique trend of film festivals had been borrowed from Hollywood. Many movies in Hollywood first debut in various film festivals and then they mark their entry into the cinema halls for the audience. Some of the recent great hits of Hollywood like Babel, Brokeback Mountain, mighty heart, a beautiful mind and many more had first made their debut at various film festivals. Following their path of success and glory, even the Indian film makers started introducing their movies in film festivals to gain popularity and audience acceptance.

Why film festivals are important: Our Indian film makers have now learn from the Hollywood and are opting for film festivals before releasing their movies in the theaters. Film festivals are a wonderful medium to show one’s movies because you get to show your movie to the various audiences from different countries and streams. In this way the movie gains global popularity. Also one secondary function of film festivals is that they fetch your movie a good media coverage which you wouldn’t have got otherwise!

Scenario of film festivals in India: Well, film festivals in India are still in its nascent stage. Though they are improving and gaining popularity but they still have a long way to go. Few film festivals in India are the Osian’s film festival, International Film Festival of India, Mumbai academy of the Moving Images International Film Festival. Though they are slowly becoming popular, they still lack support from big sponsors as in the west. But with time it seems that film festivals in India are going to be next big thing. And it’s a win win situation for both the movie makers and the audience!
