The recent move of Renuka Chowdhury, India’s minister for women and child development is an appreciable step towards removing gender discrimination. She is trying to give all the deserving rights to female population in the country. After all men and women both are equally important not only for a family but for a successful country. To be a part of successful and developed nation, gender discrimination must be buried.
Gender imbalance in India is due to the negative thoughts for girl child. They are taken as the second sex anyway. All major rights are provided to males in a family. Hence a girl child is aborted before she came on earth. People usually the poor families used to abort the girl child and to reduce the same, government has decided to provide a small help of £1,500 to the poor families to take care of the girl child. After all a girl child is also a god gift, then why it shouldn’t be accepted. She is not a burden but can do what men can.
An initial payment of 15,500 rupees will be given to the poor families who will be willing to raise a daughter. When she reaches 18, the family will be given 100,000 rupees should she be able to meet certain criteria set and remains unmarried.
21st century women is not only a homemaker, she is doing well in all the fields from professional to technical to every business sector. In many families, they are the only responsible candidate than why they should be seen low? No, they should provide the same status and position that of men. They should have an equal important part in family and outside that of men.
Chowdhary expects that the effort will surely do help in improving the status of girl child. Daughters would be no more a burden for the parents. There is a need of awareness among the people and the effort is a considerable step for the same.
